Products to help

Products to help gardens to flourish

Our focus is the promotion of horticulture to all gardeners and the encouragement of the practice of good gardening.

There continue to be many traditional ways of gardening, as well as newly evolving practices which reflect a growing awareness and commitment to environmentally sympathetic products.

The reintroduction and revival of past gardening methods can provide a key to meeting this challenge. As a business closely involved with the UK garden and horticultural markets for over 140 years, we place a high priority on developing products which will protect, nurture and respect our living environment.

Organic Gardening

Organic gardening

We offer gardeners the choice of effective, organic and alternative natural products which complement environmentally-conscious gardening.

To ensure that we meet the needs of today’s gardeners we are increasing investment into the research and development of premium quality, natural, organic and vegan products, which both help protect the growing environment as well as having high efficacy in the garden. Gardeners will find many of the products carry approval from either the Organic Farmers & Growers or the Soil Association.

Our range contains organic fertilisers, soil conditioners, organic pest control and more.

Brands

Traditional, innovative, and reputable brands designed to help gardeners achieve exceptional results.

Slug Gone

Our award-winning natural snail and slug deterrent, Slug Gone, is a brand name coining its descriptive action. Made entirely from wool, it provides gardeners with a completely organic way to protect their garden from attack.

Nippon

The iconic name in ant and insect control, derives its name (and font) from the markings on the outside of the wooden packaging crates in which it was delivered to the company from Japan in the 1960s. The name NIPPON displayed the country of origin, meaning JAPAN.

6X

6X, in gardening terms, means six times, due to the fact that these effective fibrous and pelleted fertilisers produced from poultry manure are said to produce six times more crops than the comparable use of traditional farmyard manure.

SBK

The popular alternative to glyphosate. A hard-hitting domestic weedkiller that kills at the root without harming grass.

Stay Off

A range of effective repellents and deterrents to help keep animals off garden areas. Using both natural predator scents and ultrasonic waves, 'Stay Off' does exactly what it says on the label!

Q4

Q4 was developed in the 1960's by Dr David Willis, Vitax's Technical Manager, and was the first commercial fertiliser produced to contain chelated trace elements. Working with David Dugdale, our then chemist, Dr Willis released various formulations for nursery trials with Europa Horticultural Industries, who achieved impressive growing results with one particular variation of the base fertiliser, number 4 of trial group B. The technical team suggested coining the product B4, but Mr Hutchinson, the Vitax MD, favoured the prefix letter Q, with that letter splashed in newspaper headlines and on the tip of everyone's tongues in those days, with the building at the Clyde of the famous Queen Elizabeth 2, or QE2 as she was commonly known. So Q4 was launched.

Continuing the heritage

Continuing the heritage of helping the keen gardener since the 1940s

Eric Hutchinson, the first Managing Director of Vitax Limited, wrote the eponymous Vitax Gardening Book in 1948. Full of information, tips and ideas, the book proved to be a popular and invaluable guide to traditional gardening, and demand was such that the book was printed in a second edition.
